What is aeon.chat?
Aeon is simply a messaging application utilising XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) - also called "Jabber" - which is an open and free alternative to commercial messaging providers. It is intended for use by family and friends - if you're reading this, you're likely in one or other group ;-)
Privacy is central. All communication is encrypted (OTR, OMEMO), and is hosted on my own server (running Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS and Prosody IM) in Iceland (renowned for its strict privacy laws). Only I have root access to the server. Again, all messages are encrypted so that no one can read them. You can send/receive messages and files to/from each other - similar to what's possible with applications like WhatsApp, Skype, Telegram or other services. All conversations, file downloads, video chat and communication run exclusively on the server.
How do I access?
You will have received an email from me that includes:
- your username - usually your first name
- an initial password
- the URL for this page
All you need to do now is log in via one of the XMPP applications listed below.
There are a number of applications that enable access to the service.
A full list of applications is available here
How do I log in?
Once you have installed your chosen application, you will need to add your account using the XMPP service - XMPP is usually listed in a dropdown menu, or will be a dedicated option to select. Then, log in using your username (for example, email@example.com) and the initial password I provided.
If asked for the hostname, please enter: aeon.chat
Important: If you receive an SSL message, please accept this, preferably choose ALWAYS. The message should appear only once.
